HEATSTROKE IN DOGS

Heatstroke can be fatal for dogs!

Brachycephalic breeds such as french bulldogs, pugs and boxers are especially at risk when temperatures soar.

The larger the dog is, the higher the risk.

If you have a young puppy or an elderly dog, they are at higher risk too.

So, what can you do to keep your dog cool?

If the forecast looks like you will be in for a hot day, you should keep your dog indoors at home.  A dog won't die by missing out on one or two walks when it is hot - however, they may die from heatstroke if you do take them out in the heat!  It simply isn't worth the risk.

You should alter your usual routine to put the welfare of your dog first.  There are a number of things that you can do to help them feel more comfortable:

• If the temperature allows, exercise your dog early in the morning or late in the evening when the temperature drops to an acceptable level.

• If you are out in the garden, ensure your dog has access to shade and water and don't let them sit in the sun for long!

• Shady walks with access to streams help lessen the risk slightly but please still exercise caution.

• Investing in a cooling mat can help to keep your dog cool when in the house.

• Give your dog ice cubes to munch on. Frozen Kongs or Lickimats are great too. You could even try a frozen carrot!

• Avoid walking in extreme heat and give your dog brain games or short training sessions instead. Play find the treat around the house or in a shady area of your garden!

• Familiarise yourself with the signs of heatstroke.

And please remember - vehicle temperatures will be MUCH hotter than the outdoor temperature.

Don't risk their life by travelling them in extreme heat, even for a short distance. Stay home!
